A recent posting on Jonas Salk and the polio vaccine brought back memories. My Mother was working at what was at the time a teaching hospital. She was given the chance to sign her children up to test the Salk vaccine and I got one, although we didnt know if it was the true vaccine or the placebo. When the vaccines became mandatory in school, she had to petition to find out so I wouldnt get it twice. AND, so that we didnt cause problems in the school, I had to get a fake shot when everyone lined up. Quite a different scenario than what happens now!
