A recent proposal by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to cut Medicare’s End-Stage Renal Disease program by 12 percent has me troubled. Medicare funding for dialysis already has been reduced by previous cuts, including substantial impacts from sequestration. Even though dialysis providers have learned to provide a host of important services for a modest “bundled” fee, additional cuts will no doubt have a devastating effect on this vulnerable population and their caregivers. Without adequate reimbursement, facilities may not have the staff or resources necessary to provide my patients with the care they need. Facilities may be forced to close or consolidate, requiring patients to travel greater distances for their life-sustaining care. I want the best for my patients.
