A recent question posed and one that some of you may face is: Is polishing(mastering) needed for experimental music where there is beauty in the natural roughness of the diamond? especially when today good to great results are possible from within our home studios???... Here are our thoughts: Yes indeed there is beauty in the natural roughness of the diamond in the case of a lot of music but if there are elements that hide or mask the beauty, you are looking at the beauty of this rough diamond with blurred vision and may in fact not notice it in the first place. Lets not forget that if a mastering engineer understands your intentions, he will only enhance them. Clearer vision is always a plus and having a second opinion and extra set of ears will almost always teach you something that you are perhaps not totally aware of. Just because you can see the beauty in the rough diamond, it may be because you created it, and does not mean that others will immediately see and feel it. We want to give people the best chance possible. Of course do what you are happy with and your intentions and music should land on the right sets of ears ;) A mastering engineer may or may not help with this process... there are no rules.
