A record a day number 167. Tony Ashton & Jon Lord - First Of The Big Bands. Sometimes you just fall in love with an album. Sometimes theres no reason other than the music is warm, rootsy and it hits you between the eyes. This is one of those albums, its from Jon Lord of Deep Purple fame, from Tony Ashton of Resurrection Shuffle fame, the two met when Ashton, Gardner & Dyke supported Purple on tour. It melds rock, R & B, Soul and goodtime time music. It adds brass to the obvious keyboard sound. Its wonderful (at least in my eyes - or should that be ears). It doesnt matter where you start (Celebration is a good place mind) it doesnt matter where you end (the jazzy R& B Ive been Lonely is good), it is just outstanding music. Try the Band Of The Salvation Army Band if you want an uptempo social situation. Tongue in cheek, you decide. Silly Boy is smoochy Sunday soul the sort of track youd play to your loved one to apologise for being a err silly boy :-) Were Gonna Make It starts like Hawaii Five O then quickly switches to a rock riff, it was chosen as a single and it sounds as good today as then. No notes on the album but those appearing included Carmine Appice, Ian Paice, Jim Cregan, Jerry Donahue, Peter Frampton, Pat Donaldson, Madeline Bell and Jimmy Helms and quite frankly thats enough for me to justify its position as a long forgotten gem. Seek and enjoy if you will.
