A reflection from Hell on Wheels star Anson Mount ... Thought of the night: I was thinking today that, were I to boil down my purpose in life, I would say that Im nothing but a storyteller. And then I realized its much simpler than even that. Im NOT a generative artist. At least Im not paid to be one. Im not even an interpreter. The great pianists dont stand on the stage of Carnegie Hall and tell the audience what Beethoven was thinking. They simply play Beethoven. I, simply put, am an ASSISTANT storyteller. All I can do is to decide which stories are worth telling and then to step into them. I wish modern religion held the same kind of strictures. I wish that those purporting to find the answer were able to trust the answer enough to simply step into it, live it, and trust that the living of it would communicate their answer to observers enough that those observers may come to the same answer. I dont dress up as Shakespeare when my job is to dress as Hamlet. I dont stand on my stage and spout the theories of Brecht. I simply act as best I can. Sometimes Im a terrible actor. Other times I rise above my own limitations and Im reminded why I do what I do. And those few moments are enough to remind me why the theater is important and why humanity occasionally gathers together in a dark place to ponder the deep questions of humanity.
