A remarkable thing just happened. Conjecture. I always felt but this is not my history why should I carry your guilt growing up as a child in the 80s. True. I am not a Norman, Dane nor Saxon my grand- father wasnt in any world war or white mans army to liberate us poor people of colour. So I never took a interest in another mans history. Enter academia a great lost history of Ibn Sina and ibn Batuta, but still I struggled with this nostalgia of the great Arab era. It wasnt my history. I was a woman my struggle was different a soul searching for that matriarch of resistance. I was lost, lost and failed by a system which had cleverly erased my true origins. Like a blank canvas. No name. No past. Enter the child of the 90s emancipated by their struggle, vocal about the raping and pillaging of our identity. But I was still stood at the door uneducated and searching not wanting to enter the room with so much screaming and shouting. The pillaging still carrying on by those who had not made the connection of this assimilation process erase and miseducate allowing the abused to become the abuser in order to benefit the masters of human trade and slavery. A decade of life trudging through not knowing who you are and from where you came is sacrilegious. Damaging to say the least. I always taught my sons you are Muslim first your ancestors are African and your travel document is British. I am a witness to their grounded sense of being but that void in me still kept knocking on my door daily. Until I read this article by a Palestinian sister. I heard her words, every word literally read to me like I was a young child sat with a matriarch so big and strong... strikingly beautiful and unequivocalbly beautiful. So I closed one door and entered a new one this early morning. After much inner reflection and the soothing words of the mothers voice in the article it became clear to me like the early dawn of fajr. I am a woman of colour. I am a Black African Mother.
