A reminder that tonight, Friday, January 23rd a rare Triple Shadow - TopicsExpress

A reminder that tonight, Friday, January 23rd a rare Triple Shadow Transit event will occur on Jupiter - an event that won’t re-occur until the year 2032! If the skies are clear, Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Toronto Centre astronomers and interested members of the public are invited to gather to observe the event at Bayview Village Park, located on the east side of Bayview Avenue, about 700 metres north of the Sheppard Subway station. Limited parking is available. The Triple Shadow Transit Event occurs for approximately 40 minutes, starting at 1:30 am Saturday morning, but other interesting events occur at 12:58 am and 1:21 am. We anticipate that at least some of the telescopes will be setup from 11 pm onwards. Be sure to dress more warmly than the forecasted temperatures call for - youll be standing around in the cold for quite some time! Snacks, warm beverages, and chairs are a good idea, too. There are no restrooms at the park. PLEASE NOTE - This event is not visible through clouds! The astronomers will only be there if Jupiter is visible in a clear sky. So look up as you leave the house. Our fingers are crossed for clear skies! Here is the detailed list of timings for the event in the GTA: 10:11 pm Friday : Callistos round black shadow begins transit (the Great Red Spot will already be mid-planet at this time.) 11:35 pm Friday : Ios shadow begins to transit 11:53 pm Friday : Io begins to transit 12:58 pm Friday : Ios shadow merges with Callistos shadow for a few minutes! 1:16 am Saturday : Callisto begins to transit 1:21 am Saturday : Io will passes right over Callisto’s shadow! 1:29 am Saturday : Europa’s shadow begins to transit - all three shadows and two moons will be on the planet’s face simultaneously! 1:34 am Saturday : Jupiter culminates at +62 degrees altitude, due south 1:53 am Saturday : Triple shadow transit ends as Ios shadow moves off 2:08 am Saturday : Europa begins to transit as moon Io moves off the opposite limb 2:59 am Saturday : Callisto’s shadow moves off 4:21 am Saturday : Europa’s shadow moves off Regards, Chris Vaughan RASCT TC Event Astronomy Coordinator
