A reminder to my fellow musicians today to respect yourself and your craft. You deserve to get paid for your work! If a promoter is urging you to take a gig for no pay and requesting that you bring the crowd to boot, you can do yourself and the entire music scene a favor by passing on that gig. If youre not sure how else to book a gig, ask a gigging musician for advice. We support each other. You deserve to be treated with respect! If a company urges you to buy their PR or other services, suggesting that your music career will die a quick death or go to the graveyard if you dont, again... Do us all a favor by opting instead to educate yourself on the topic until you feel qualified to either do it yourself or vet a qualified person WHO RESPECTS YOUR INTELLIGENCE to do it for you. Its cool to support other people within the music industry with your money if they can do a better job for you than you can, and you can afford it! But dont waste your money on someone who is trying to scare you into emptying your wallet. Finally, whatever your goals are with music - own them and let them guide your choices. We dont all want the same thing. The right next move for someone who wants to quit her day job and tour ASAP may not be the right move for someone who just wants to put out a well crafted CD and perform locally. Only you know whats right for you.
