A report in todays Daily Mail comments that a cashier in a North-West London branch of Tesco has refused to sell a woman ham because it violated his deeply held Muslim beliefs. The report continues that no action has been taken against the cashier over the incident, and that there is no threat of legal action. What a pity it was not halal ham! Of course legal action would almost certainly have ensued had the customer requested halal ham! As far as Im concerned I believe that the cashier is certainly working in the wrong job, and a preferable position would be one in which he only dealt with people of his religious persuasion and belief. Alternatively, he could opt to live in a country where this is the norm. Its important it is that we learn to be tolerant of each others beliefs, but that means that everyone, no matter what their own deeply held convictions are, must practise tolerance..
