A reporter for The Atlantic recently visited some of our nations libraries to better understand how they serve communities and found out something that NLSP also discovered in our community outreach: low-income job seekers in DC rely on libraries for a range of needs, particularly in communities east of the Anacostia River. Ms. Fallows shared the following observation. One of my first stops inside the libraries I’ve visited has been to ask a librarian what most of the people are likely to be up to at the busy banks of computer terminals. The answer always includes some version of “looking for jobs” or “applying for jobs.” The librarians also add that they spend a lot of time helping guide people through the process. This is why NLSP has partnered with DC Public Library to conduct legal information clinics in the libraries -- during their job seeker programs -- as part of our Removing Barriers to Employment work. This allows us to help job seekers identify barriers to employment that civil legal aid lawyers can help resolve and to help the patrons move quickly to seeking legal assistance while they are still in the neighborhood library branch. #dcpubliclibrary #dcbarfoundation #TheAtlantic
