A review of Monday nights Nemix gig at Bar 38 Newcastle by Duncan - TopicsExpress

A review of Monday nights Nemix gig at Bar 38 Newcastle by Duncan Watson. First on was Tony Gowland who played a short set of cover versions on the electric piano. He did a fine job. Next up was a nice surprise. 3 At Sea facebook/3atSea are a 4 piece, incorporating piano, acoustic guitar, cello and lovely set of harmonising vocals. Their music is very gentle and occasionally the noisy pub crowd threatened to drown them out but they played very well and were well appreciated. As if one surprise was not enough, on came The King’s Collection facebook/thekingscollectionmusic and they were truly excellent. They are a local 5 piece band who were playing only their 3rd gig. Their songs were catchy, the swapping around of instruments was impressive and their musical style is enthralling. The crowd loved them and they put on a very good show. As much as the rest of the band ridiculed lead singer Katharine’s banter, she did a fantastic job of keeping us entertained with stories about their songs. Finally on came Jen Stevens and Jen Stevens & The Hiccups facebook/jenstevensandthehiccups who are always good live. Astonishingly, the crowd had largely dissipated leaving just a handful of people to watch them play but they were treated to a fantastic show, with the band playing many songs from their current EP as well as kicking off with their current single The Sound. They are as tight as a button live and with all four members on vocals at many points in the show, the overall effect was an amazing wall of incredibly enjoyable tunes. It is high time this band hit the big time as they have been a hidden gem for far too long now. The whole evening was an absolute joy to watch and just goes to show just how much great talent there is in the Newcastle area.
