A robust rendering of the Risen Christ, from Bicol. Here Jesus is a swarthy ,barrel-chested man, with large hands and feet and abs! There is a virility to this sculpture that is so very different from the sometimes effete depictions of the risen savior. Here is Kristo as a man of the people, a laborer or farmer, a Revolutionary ala Sakay! Pardon me for waxing poetic, but a good santo ,like any good work of art, allows the mind to travel and conjecture all interpretations. I bought this along with six other great santos from the estate of collector who was disposing. Only this stayed on because it really spoke to me about how The carver saw Christ as a physical being, transformed by the glory of the Resurrection. Molave wood with traces of polychromy, 13 inches high.
