A rough nights sleep at a home stay that meant 3 mattresses with questionable sheets jammed into one room that sequestered us with 2 stir crazy cats. Luckily a visit to trombonist Jeb Bishops place in Durham, NC was on the other side of the days drive to Raleigh. He gave us a lunch of pot roast, we got some sleep, and then we headed to Neptunes to run heads and eat dinner before the show. Jeb played in a quartet with acoustic cello, violin, and bass- interesting instrumentation and music. The run-through that Nate and I did of the charts at soundcheck really consolidated the execution of the material that night, in many ways it may have been the strongest performance of the compositions on the tour so far, a great balance between improvisational interplay and clear articulation of the pieces. Nate was starting to fight the onset of a cold but you couldnt tell from the way he played, which was very strong and inventive. The weather was bad, rain threatening to turn to sleet, so we packed out after the gig and went back to Jebs to listen to music from Benin, Misha Mengelbergs Whose Bridge, and an Ellington album called Unheard Session, a septet recording which features Laurence Brown and Harry Carney, with brilliant arrangements (alto and baritone giving the illusion of having a tenor between them due to the way Ellington blended Ray Nances trumpet with the saxes)- truly beautiful. https://youtube/watch?v=jicOoaD7ppg
