A safety reminder, especially for women shopping alone, as the Christmas season gets more hectic: 1. Buckle your purse in the shopping cart using the childrens seatbelts. Keep it there until you can safely put it in your car and lock the door while you put groceries in the trunk. 2. Watch for people riding through parking lots on bicycles...they can grab your purse and get away quickly. Use a cart and keep the purse locked in until you get to the car. 3. Pay attention to anyone approaching you!! You can replace groceries. You cannot replace YOU! Lock yourself in your car until they go somewhere else if you are not comfortable. 4. If a stranger approaches you, especially in a darkened parking lot, throw up a hand as a HALT sign and say loudly No! I dont know you! so others can hear. There is NO good reason for a man to approach a single woman he does not know. None. 5. Dont be embarrassed to go back inside a store and ask for an escort if you do not feel safe. 6. Publix provides service to take your bags to the car. Its worth it. 7. Do not ever allow a man with a gun to get you into a car alone. Run. Fight. Blow your horn. Scream. If he is going to kill you, make him do it in public. You are more likely to survive if his immediate need is to get away and not get caught. 8. Be safe. Be aware. If you are on the cell phone, great...but STAY focused on your surroundings. 9. Lock your doors the second you get inside your car. 10. Have your keys in hand before you leave the store. I keep mine in a lanyard around my neck and I have been in situations where I felt unsafe and I was very happy they were close at hand. I call them my dork keys and I dont care. I care about surviving.
