A salute to the women of Girls Standing Together! While some of you may know about Girls Standing Together...a local nonprofit...this is for those that dont. A few years back, GST was simply a group of women that had a mutual goal of organizing events and giving back.Toy drives, fundraisers, serving meals to the homeless, organizing large scale awareness events, you name it. Today, while they still have that goal...theyre really illustrating how with passion and heart...anyone can find a way to help others. My relationship with GST began a few years back as they led the charge to help raise over $50,000 for Harbor House of Central Florida (a domestic violence shelter in in Orange County) & as they helped win HH a high end security system. They wowed me as they looked at the goals and just attacked them fearlessly with drive, determination and passion. Glenda Chauncy along with her girls helped in the renovation of Mrs. Smith House in 24 Hours for Mrs. Smith... a top to bottom remodel of a 96 year old womens home in Carver Shores. Whether it was painting or begging for building supplies...they stopped at nothing to help. And that started with a simple phone call for help from now Commissioner Regina Hill. Let me say it again...it all started with a simple phone call asking for help. Monthly, GST visits the homeless shelter of Womens Residential & Counseling Center and prepares a full meal for the women and children living there. Last night was no exception. These are pics from their event. As the pics came through my newsfeed this morning I paused and thought...these ladies are awesome. I mean, most would do a meal...maybe once. But they do this religiously, getting the food donated and sharing conversations with the women who live there. They talk with them about their situation, their struggles...their desires to get their lives back together. How great is that...talking with total strangers about embracing their situation and future...but with a light at the end of the tunnel. It takes special people to see people in need and emotionally & physically step in to help. Their acts are so selfless. GST has now established an official non profit and have identified several events for the coming year to bring attention and awareness to the issue of bullying. They have no paid staff...just volunteers on a mission: Making a difference in the city we call home. I invite you to get to know the organization Girls Standing Together and the women that are real change agents in Orlando.
