A scary thing occurred with me tonight, but Im OK. It wasnt the outcome of the traffic accident I came upon in the darkness of the rainy night. No one seemed to be hurt. However, being the usual good citizen I try to be, I called the police to have them arrive and prevent any further accidents on the dark stretch of road. As I finished my report, the policeman on the phone said, Thanks Moshe. Wait a second, I didnt tell you my name. How did you know my name? Whats the problem? You have an ID card and youre an Israeli citizen, right? he asked. I told him that it had nothing to do with it. Why did he know my name? I dont consider myself paranoid, and Ive made numerous calls to the police to help in dangerous situations. But I am still shocked to think that they know my name just from my phone number. In America, its against the Bill of Rights for the government to follow its citizens without a court order. I know that was destroyed with the Patriot Act, and I know Israel is not the United States. But Im still shocked and pissed.
