A school in southern Tasmania wants children to get back to the good old days of playing in the mud and climbing trees during their lunchtimes. Designer Miriam Shevland said current playground designs have a strong safety element and are good at directing children how to play, but she is interested in throwing different challenges at young people. A piece of playground equipment essentially tells the child what to do, she said. Trees at some point got stripped from school yards because they were too dangerous, so we’re putting them all back in again.
