A section of MPs have countered ousted Meru Governor Peter Munya’s claims that Deputy President William Ruto is interfering with the countys politics. The MPs, mainly from Meru and Tharaka-Nithi counties told reporters on Tuesday that Mr Munya is diverting the attention of voters by crying wolf. Mr Mithika Linturi, MP for Igembe South, said Mr Munya was like “a drowning man trying to cling on floating leaves and twigs in vain.” “As a national leader, he (the Deputy President) is entitled to move around the country. And as local leaders, our task was to facilitate that and ensure he meets Kenyans,” he said. “We don’t require the Deputy President to help us sort out Munya. Munya has already been chewed (politically) and I tell you, in 60 days, you will see a new leader,” he said on behalf of other MPs. Until two weeks ago, Mr Munya was Meru Governor. But a Court of Appeal sitting in Nyeri nullified his election over election irregularities during last years General Election. And Last week, Mr Ruto toured Meru and Tharaka-Nithi counties in the company of local leaders thought to support Munya’s rival, Dr Kilemi Mwiria. The former Governor later said Mr Ruto should keep off Meru politics. “We are wondering why the Appellate court ruling date was changed and the DP’s visit to Meru was postponed to coincide with the weekend that my election was nullified. I read malice in the whole scenario and I am telling them that we are not at the mercy of anybody at the national government,” he told a gathering at the Kenya Methodist University on Sunday in Meru County. “We are not against Mr Ruto visiting Meru. But he should keep off Meru politics and let those eyeing the governor’s seat to campaign on their own. We can handle our politics and don’t need the influence of others,” he lamented. But the MPs who voiced support for Dr Mwiria argue’ Mr Rutos visit was planned a month ago and had involved a prepared agenda away from politics of the county. According to Mr Linturi, Mr Ruto had come for a fundraising event as well as “thank voters” for electing a United Republican Party (URP) MP in the area. Mr Ruto belongs to the URP, a key component of the Jubilee administration. And the MPs from Meru region accuse Mr Munya of being afraid of losing. “He is running away from the reality on the ground,” added Tigania East legislator Mpuri Aburi who once contested against Munya in previous parliamentary elections. “When we wanted to hold an open nomination, he hid under his seat. He should know Meru County does not belong to his mother.” Other MP at the press conference included Igembe North MP Joseph MEruaki, Mr Kathuri Murungi (Imenti South), Mr Kanini Kega, Muthomi Njuki (Chuka Igamba Ng’ombe) and Kimani Ichungwa.
