A sense of great pride! Finally - India is now home to 70 per cent of the worlds tigers, India’s environment minister Prakash Javadekar said today. From an estimated 100,000 tigers at the beginning of the 20th century, India saw the numbers drop to 1,411 in 2008. But now the country is celebrating its “huge success story”, as are conservationists. “Much of the credit must go to the sterling work of the protection staff, who daily battle the forces of doom and destruction, apathy and corruption,” said Julian Matthews, of Travel Operators for Tigers, a campaign group advocating responsible tiger tourism.
