A severe weather warning is currently in place for our region. Damaging winds, heavy rainfall and damaging surf are expected to affect the Metropolitan, Hunter, Illawarra and South Coast forecast districts. Winds of 60 – 70km/h with peak gusts of 90 – 110km/h are forecast to develop this afternoon and evening along the coastal fringe of the Metropolitan and Illawarra forecast districts, then for the late evening and overnight for the coastal fringe of the Hunter district. Thunderstorms and heavy rain which may lead to FLASH FLOODING are forecast for parts of the South Coast and Illawarra districts today, and developing for the Metropolitan and part of the Hunter forecast districts this afternoon and evening. Widespread falls of 40 to 60mm are expected in these areas, with possible locally higher falls of 100 to 150mm. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: - Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. - Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. - Keep clear of fallen power lines. - Dont drive, ride or walk through flood water. - Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. - If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
