A shameful part of US history: Redlining practices, which made inaccurate assumptions about neighborhood residents and resulted (among other things) in banks disinvestment in those neighborhoods because they were deemed not to be safe investments. Redlining contributed to further decay in urban, minority neighborhoods and was thankfully outlawed, starting in the late 1960s.
