A share of the spoils for the Super Staveley U11 Blues. Yet - TopicsExpress

A share of the spoils for the Super Staveley U11 Blues. Yet another of last seasons promoted sides waited to greet the Blues at Westfield school on Sunday and yet another expected close contest was on the cards as Staveley went in search of their first win in three, following unfortunate defeats away at Porter FC and Kiveton Park. In true Blues fashion the game began with a high tempo with Staveley on the front foot early doors, looking eager to secure the advantage quickly. Attacks through Cameron Dovison and Lewis Imrie were cancelled out by a rattled Rother Valley defence but before you could scream ‘Get In!’ Will Brooks received the ball on the right wing before cutting inside and firing home to put the visitors ahead within the first two minutes. It had been a promising start for Staveley, full of energy and with fluid passing to boot but with Rother Valley beginning to stir from their initial slumber the match took on a more contentious guise. Both teams began to struggle in possession, losing the ball to the other shortly after receiving it, with no real threat to score at either end and any attacks breaking down quickly apart from one fortunate foray by the hosts who found the net on 10 minutes to level. A new football cliché had been born, it had certainly been ‘a half of two halves’ for Staveley who after starting well with nimble flowing football, had lost their way slightly and toward the end of the half were given a scare with Rother Valley being awarded an indirect free kick inside the area as a stray ball collected by keeper Ben Collins was awarded as a pass back by the official. Fortunately for the Blues the home side had been erratic and the opportunity to take the lead was turned down, one or two uncertain passes allowed Staveley to clear the ball and a rare threat fizzled out. Half Time: Rother Valley Juniors 1 v 1 Staveley MWFC The second half felt very much like the first although threats at each end became more frequent. Luke Hedley had produced an assured performance up to now in the Staveley defence and maintained his conduct, making some crucial tackles, earning himself the man of the match award. Luke had now been joined in defence by midfield maestro Cam Dovison as a reinforcement in an attempt to hinder recurring Rother attacks, each becoming more precarious than the last. Staveley were now relying on the counter attack to snatch the spoils, using the blistering pace of Will Brooks and Lewis Imrie to torment the home side. On occasions both came close, attacking down both wings and through the middle but finding themselves out of luck with each shot. As the game drew to a close the initial expectation of a close game had been realised, with both sides seemingly happy to walk away with a point. There was one last moment of excitement though, literally as the referee began to raise the whistle to his lips Cam Dovison supplied Lewis Imrie with a lofted pass, who found himself yards clear of a chasing rear guard and one on one with a rushing Rother keeper only to be denied by a confident save (I would’ve put my house on that). The whistle was blown and the match was drawn, in all fairness having been very equal with both sides I’m sure being capable of more on another day. On to next Sundays home fixture against Millhouses Juniors, the three points will be ours!! Well played lads! Vamooooos!!!
