A short excerpt from Winds of Change, book two of the Empires Lost series ___________________________________ October 3, 1942 Thorne rose to his feet and lifted his head well above the roof level of the APC, exposing it to the surrounding environment and causing him to wince in discomfort as his eyes were assaulted by the full force of the rising sun above the eastern horizon. Using one hand to steady himself by gripping the nearest sidewall, he delved into a top pocket with the other and drew out a pair of green-tinted, aviator-style Ray-Bans. Turning his head for a moment he watched as the two Sentinels, Jake and Elwood rumbled past a few dozen metres to the north. HIS tanks... he smiled faintly as he thought of the pair of cinematic characters that were their namesakes. “Its twenty-odd miles to Kibrit...” he began softly, his smirk broadening noticeably as he slid the glasses down over his eyes “...weve got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, its dark... and were wearing sunglasses...” He stood silent for a moment, pausing for effect and for his own amusement before delivering the final punchline, during which time Morris and the driver, having overheard his remarks, both stared up at the brilliant blue sky above and threw each other quizzical glances. “Er... just how dark ARE those sunglasses, sir...?” Morris ventured tentatively, unable to help himself. Oh, just bloody-well get going then! Thorne growled sourly in return, his ‘moment well and truly spoiled. The APC lurched off behind the tanks, the driver needing no further bidding as Thorne managed a wry smile in spite of himself I gotta work with a MUCH younger audience...! He muttered softly under his breath. ____________________________________ Its been slow going lately but its still coming... just started chapter fifteen and the end is now vaguely visible in the distance; perhaps 4 = 5 chapters left out if 21 or so. Thanks to everyone being so patient.
