A short while ago I returned hurriedly from the cinema after seeing the film 12 Years a Slave. Its impact was wrought with emotion–like a jack-screw through my brain. This film will stay in my head for a long time to come. But I hope it does more than this too. I hope it becomes the foment of action that is evidenced in me when outrage becomes action and when I stand up to face down evil, injustice, brutality, indifference to suffering, and the polarizing greed encouraged by most of the fallacies we hold as self-evident truths in our civilization, that some people deserve more than others and that there is not enough of what everybody needs to go around. I may not be as blond or as brave as Olaf but after seeing this movie tonite... this is the song I sing :Upon Viewing the Film 12 Years a Slave -- by Derek T. My Pledge, by All, to undo these wrongs of ears disinclined to hear their songs, if ticking in this carapace–-my relic haemorrhaged interstice do not seek right in debt of this suspending such insensate avarice -- Cains mark, by God, on my back be wrought!
