A simple and powerful way to honor veterans is to say thank you, said Air Force Col. Mike Kinslow at Horizon Middle Schools Veterans Day assembly. Students and staff gathered on Tuesday, November 11 to honor family, community and staff on Veterans Day. Place others before yourself, Kinslow said, professional duties take place over personal desires. Kinslow stressed the importance of recognizing veterans as role models during his ten minute address as the featured speaker at the Sand Creek zone school. The United States Air Force Academy Stellar Brass band performed for the packed crowd. The ensemble, including two trumpets, a tube, trombone, french horn and percussionist played several Jazz favorites as well as Off We Go Into the Wild Blue Yonder. The Horizon Middle School eighth grade band honored the veterans in attendance with a spirited rendition of The Military March. Students, staff, parents and veterans gave the group a standing ovation. The assembly concluded with a solemn playing of Taps before veterans exited the gymnasium to cheers from the Panther student body. Coffee and cookies were provided for the honored guests after the conclusion of the program.
