A simple way of looking at the body is through the eyes of a shaman. Though most shamanic models are very complicated and subtle, dividing the self into many parts, most shamanic traditions divide the self into three parts. The middle self is the body and linear mind, including the ego. It is the part of the self which most non-mystics relate. The modern world focuses on the middle self. The lower self is the body of instinct, psychic ability, and primal emotion. The higher self is the spiritual, divine, and enlightened self that most people feel detached from. It is connected to the other selves, but the middle self must use the lower self to consciously connect and commune with the higher self. The lower self acts as a bridge, informing us of the higher self’s message through our intuitions, dreams, impressions, and visions. Our higher and lower selves take part in the process of manifesting our life, our reality. When we send out our intentions into the world, through our thoughts, words and deeds, the lower self collects the energy of our intentions, and brings this energy to the higher self. The higher self uses this energy to metaphorically pave the road to our future life. The higher self can only create a life based upon the raw building materials we give it. If we give it shoddy intentions, our road is rougher. If we are clear in our intentions, the road of our future comes with fewer bumps. This three-self shamanic road-building model might be symbolic, yet the experience and relationship of the three selves is very real. - Christopher Penczak The Mystic Foundation: Understanding and Exploring the Magical Universe amzn.to/1xAGoEc Image Credit: Miguel Tio buff.ly/1zdYIFr
