A sleepless night last night, ideas racing through my head. The latest: why not play around with Shakespeare and turn his plays into business stories, perfect for an eBook? So this morning I played around with Macbeth, a tale of succession planning gone tragically wrong. King Duncan, the CEO of Scotland, has no art to find the mind’s construction but is still considered by shareholders to be generating adequate returns. His ambitious chief financial officer, Wayne Macbeth, brings in some consultants disguised as witches. Deciding that there is no spur to prick the sides of his intent but only vaulting ambition which leaps o’ver itself, he resolves to do an MBA but ends up back-stabbing Duncan instead. His wife, Lady Macbeth, helps him overcome scruples but goes mad when her Nasdaq shares tank. Investors become suspicious when the murdered Banquo, Duncan’s next of kin, attacks the corporate strategy at the AGM. This is followed by a hostile raid on the company from agribusiness giant Burnham Wood. Macbeth, deciding that all our yesterdays have lighted the way to dusty death, cashes in his stock options and heads off to Cayman Island tax shelters, where the weather is warmer. I reckon that would work.
