A small extract from my dissertation...!* My aim is to explore the concept as to why young women in the United Kingdom have become victims of such crimes. I will examine the relationship between ethnicity, religion and culture which entails a perpetrator to carry out such a horrific act. Banaz Mahmod, a young woman from South London who was a victim of an honour killing pleaded for help but was failed by the Metropolitan Police. Banaz Mahmod was killed by a brutal beating, rape and suffocation. In order to convict the killers there were 47 house searches, 22 arrests and 779 statements, 16 were bailed whilst many of the suspects had fled back to their home of origin Iraqi Kurdistan. Shafilea Ahmed was a young girl who was killed by the hands of her parents, tortured in many forms until the end she was suffocated with a plastic bag hard-pressed down her throat in front of her younger siblings. Her parents were sentenced 25 years imprisonment for the murder of their daughter. I will compare the two case studies of the young women in more detail and outline the police failures from preventing the deaths and an action plan to evade future ‘honour’ killings. In addition to the motivation of the perpetrators of the two, by understanding their heritage, beliefs and values which are often misguided or interpreted by family, community leaders or clerics.
