A small group of Web Design and New Media students were invited to attend the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit this week taking place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. It was inspiring, said Yessel Hinojosa, WNM Graduate student. Panelists included founder of Twitter and Square Jack Dorsey, Susan Wojcicki, C.E.O. of YouTube, and new innovators such as Ben Silbermann, founder and C.E.O. of Pinterest. While topics varied from architecture to politics, there were many insights into the modern tech marketplace that give design students a look into their future. One great takeaway was that technology is global and has many unknown possibilities left to explore by start ups and established companies alike. A few selected thoughts from some of the industry panelists: Bob Iger, Chairman and C.E.O. The Walt Disney Company Leaders need to be optimists. No one wants to follow a pessimist. Sophia Amoruso, founder, NastyGal I surround myself with people smarter than me and it is my privilege to work with them every day. Jack Dorsey, co-dounder and chairman of Twitter, co-founder and C.E.O. of Square Twitter made [the city] feel small. You feel that you are still close to people..and you get this sense of the world and rowd. Matthew Weiner, Television Writer and Creator of Mad Men We need to thrive on rejection. If you have something good, it is worth taking your time to get there. Jenji Kohan, Television Writer and Creator of Orange is the New Black I have a plan A and a plan B. Brian Chesky, co-founder and C.E.O of Airbnb The first thing you do when you start a company is build a product. At some point you have to switch to building the company…the people. Tony Fadell, found and C.E.O. of Nest Our goal is to take the things all around us that have been unloved for years and reinvent them. Ben Silbermann, founder and C.E.O. of Pinterest Creative people want to be challenged to incredibly ambitious things. Jonathan Ive, Senior VP of Design for Apple For hundreds of years, the things that we have made, the form is the function…Then something happened with the [computer] chip. The function is anonymous. [Designers] have to provide context in culture. [Focus] is not something you aspire to. When you really truly focus it seems illegal. You achieve so much when you can truly focus. We draw. We still draw. A beautiful product that works terribly is ugly.
