A small tale to accompany this video. Lale Andersens version of Lili Marlene was very popular among German troops. British soldiers in North Africa picked up broadcasts of this song from Nazi-occupied Radio Belgrade and it became one of the most popular Tommy songs. Versions of it were made in English and Italian. My mother also loved this song and used to sing it often (in mangled German, I should add). She once started singing it in Yugoslavia, but the interpreter asked her to stop it. The Yugoslavs hated the song because the Nazis killed one in ten Yugoslavs. Behind the schmaltz, there was unbridled violence.
