A somber Anniversary today. I remember exactly where I was on - TopicsExpress

A somber Anniversary today. I remember exactly where I was on September 11, 2001. I was working in an office in Downton, Washington DC approximately 8 blocks from the White House. After seeing the events unfold on the news, everyone from our office was sent home. Typically, I road METRO, but I realized there was nothing to stop a potential subway bombing. My friend and coworker offered to ride the bus with me instead of the subway. My cellphone had died, but luckily my friends phone was fully charged. Keep in mind that about 3 million people in downtown DC were all released and sent home as well, pretty much at the same time. My friend and I boarded the bus and sat next to each other for our trip to my apartment in Arlington. We barely spoke on the way home, stunned at what had transpired in New York, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon. A typical 45 minute bus ride turned into 5 hours. The streets of DC were chaotic and cell phone lines were jammed. The tension was palatable. I thank God I had my friend with me. I feel as though she took charge and made the situation alot more bearable for me. You see, I was 3 months pregnant with my first (and only)child. My friend held my hand, let me use her phone and shared a jar of jelly beans she had in her totebag. Rather than leave her on the bus alone, I asked her to get off the bus with me. Then my husband and I drove her home from there. Im pretty sure I thanked her about a dozen times on the way to her house. I am posting this as another Thank you to my friend, and as a Thank you to all the brave Fireman, Police Officers and Friends who helped get America through this tragedy. God Bless America!
