A special court called the Sandiganbayan has ordered the forfeiture in favour of the government more than $300,000 in ill-gotten wealth, which a retired general had amassed while serving as the chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). The court issued the order after noting that retired general Lisandro Abadia failed to make a satisfactory and convincing explanation how he amassed his illegal wealth while in active service. If Abadia and his wife could not produce the $300,000, the Sandiganbayan ordered the sale of their properties equivalent to that amount. A graduate of the state-run Philippine Military Academy (PMA), Abadia served the military for 36 years highlighted by his promotion as the AFP chief of staff in 1991 until his retirement in 1994. In 2004, the Sandiganbayan also convicted Abadia for perjury for failing to include in his statement of assets, liabilities and networth (Saln) a private property he had acquired while still with the military. Under a law, all government employees from the president down to the janitor are mandated to submit their Salns annually mainly to determine whether they have enriched themselves while in office.
