A staff of an EU funded project, implemented for the National Planning Commission, working in the nine states of the Niger Delta was Wednesday last week robbed at gun point at his Ekorinim residence in Calabar. The victim, a German national who pleaded not to be mentioned for safety reasons told CrossRiverWatch that the incident happened in the presence of his two little kids. “It was about 8:15pm that evening and I heard a knock on the door at my house in Ekorinim. That happens every evening when neighbors come to knock to say either NEPA is back or Water is back, so I didn’t have to worry. But when I opened the door, two guys with guns came in and held us hostage. “My two little kids, one almost three years and the other one year old were with their aunty in the room, they were ordered out and all of us were asked to close our eyes, don’t shout or we will be shot. I think they were afraid that our shouting could alert neighbors, one of the guys held me and my family hostage at gunpoint while the other went into the rooms stealing money and electronics and all that. “This lasted for about an hour. They quick left with all that they had stolen and I think the Landlord’s wife called the landlord who later called the police and the police came after about thirty minutes and took our statements. “The police have been getting back to me but not with any success but I want the public and the government to know about this incident so that something can be done about security around here. There are increasing cases of child kidnapping around here and government has to intensify security patrols around here.” He said. The victim’s residence, just around the Cameroonian Consulate in Calabar is only a few meters away from the residence of the state Commissioner of police, in a neighborhood generally regarded as highbrow, where almost the crème-de-la-crème of Cross River State own houses.
