A state of public emergency has been declared in Guatemala as the result of a prolonged drought. The agricultural losses are largely in corn and beans, basic staples of the regions diet, the United Nations World Food Program and the Food and Agriculture Organization said in a joint statement. In addition to mass hunger, the effects of the drought have driven prices up for these staples. As it is, Guatemala’s poorest people already spend up to 80% of their income on food. Pablo and Adonias, young boys abandoned by their father, are some of Guatemala’s most poor. Their mother, who labors on coffee farms with her machete at half the income to a man’s salary, can’t earn enough to keep her four children fed. Fortunately, her family is one that receives food aid from Adopt-a-Village; the boys are pictured about to carry a large basket of delivered food to their hut.
