A storm system developed off the mid Atlantic states yesterday and is intensifying as it slowly moves NNE towards the Maritimes. This system is currently located just south of Cape Cod and will reach its peak intensity this afternoon then begin to slowly weaken as it crosses the Maritimes tomorrow. Heavy snow and very strong winds will accompany this system today. Periods of snow tomorrow and diminishing winds expected tomorrow. This system pulls away to the NE later tomorrow allowing high pressure to build in over the region for Thursday (Clean-up). The break wont be long as yet another system will be developing in the Gulf of Maine on Friday spreading more snow across the region Friday night into Saturday. High pressure briefly builds in for Sunday night then yet a third system spreads more snow into the region for Monday. Precipitation.. Light snow has begun across the island already and will become heavy at times.Chance of the snow changing over to rain this evening over Kings county. Snowfall amounts by midnight tonight in the 30 cms range but could be lower over eastern half of the island due to some rain. A few more cms snow possible tomorrow. Dry for later tomorrow and Thursday then more snow develops Friday evening and continues into Saturday and early Sunday. Latest models are hinting at another 10-15 cms snow with this system as well. Temperatures.. Will slowly climb today reaching -1 by late this evening. Could go above zero for a few ours overnight for eastern regions. Colder air floods back in tomorrow afternoon. Cold for Thursday. Milder again for Friday-Saturday. Arctic air returns for later Sunday and continues through the week. Wind.. Increasing ENE winds today becoming strong by noon. Strong winds continue all night tonight briefly diminishing tomorrow noonish as the center of the storm crosses then quickly back to strong NNW tomorrow afternoon as the system pulls away. Diminishing NNW winds later tomorrow dropping off to calm by Thursday Noon. SE winds then develop ahead of the net system Thursday evening. Watches/warnings.. Blizzard warning remains in effect for all the island today. Hazards... Very strong winds developing this morning and when combined with cold dry snow will give greatly reduced visibilities in blowing and drifting snow. Higher than normal water levels possible in the Northumberland Strait today especially during the high tide cycle. Rafting of sea ice on shore may also occur today along the western south shore.
