A story and a poem with a sentiment that we wish more humans felt... The horse in the photo is Jazz (reg. as “Connies Gem” with the American Jockey Club) She is a 29yo American Thoroughbred who raced & was then bred 16 years consecutively producing 13 live foals (which required Nurse mares) that earned approx $300,000 for her previous owners. She was found with 2 other emaciated brood mares the summer of 2004 - the year DRFarm.org was founded. She and the others were a mere 1-2 on the Henneke body condition scale & she had just been declared barren with the Jockey Club 6 months prior to being abandoned. Jazz was the only mare with a clean tattoo (the others were damaged presumably with a chain under the lip) which is how the charity discovered her identity. One of her sons, Gemma Nuz, known at home as D was also rescued separately by a family in Florida who found him severely emaciated. They connected with DRFarm and are searching for Jazzs other off spring and vowed to keep D safe for the remainder of his life. He looks just like her & displays several of her behavioral characteristics. Jazz has been happily enjoying retirement for the last 10 years and will remain well loved by the volunteer staff at DRFarm until she crosses the rainbow bridge. No worries Jazz - DRFarm loves you for life! https://facebook/groups/10715719958/ Poem by Jess Vee of Voices4Horses https://facebook/voices4horses
