A story in todays paper that angers and saddens at the same time. Seems that the Wisconsin Legislature has passed a bill that allows construction of what could end up the largest open pit mine in the world. It will initially be about 4 miles long, half a mile wide and 1,000 feet deep. It could be extended up to twenty one miles in length. Its going to be built near on of the rivers that feed Lake Superior, cleanest of the Great Lakes and an important fresh water supply. To make it easier for the company, called GTac for short, to build the mine, scott walker signed legislation last year that allows the company to fill in lakes and streams with mine waste, eliminates required public hearing under oath for the company on its environmental practices and only taxes them on their profits, not on the ore taken from the mine. Do you think this sweetheart deal could have anything to do with the $15 million on campaign contributions the company has made to walker and the Wisconsin republibaggers?
