A story that could have been written at Welcome Home. Jacob says his experiences with death and violence will never quite leave him, because war leaves lasting damage. In some ways, he says, war can reveal a person’s true self. “If you want to know what lies inside a human being, if you want to judge someone, you have to look at them in a war,” he says. “You’ll know it when they’re in a war, and everyone’s running about, and kids fall down. That’s when you’ll know what a human being is, or what lies within a person — if they’ll stop and take care of them, or if they’ll just run by taking care of themselves.”
