A strong foundation is essential for a strong house to remain strong and intact. We all know this saying. The same holds true for your body. You need a strong foundation for health, vitality, and overall wellbeing. What is that foundation? Oriental medicine and Chinese martial arts understands this foundation to being your legs. For thousands of years it has not been a secret that strong legs with great circulation and flexibility allowed for great Kung Fu practice. Great Kung Fu requires Great Health as a prerequisite. According to Oriental medical theory, there are interconnecting energetic pathways in the body and all your organs, including your digestive system (and brain) called meridians. By strengthening and conditioning your foundation (legs) over time, you also stimulate the bio-electromagnetic flow (called Qi) which travels via this meridian pathway, into every organ in your body, thus strengthening their anatomic functions. Strong legs means good health. Want to hear more? Read on... Written in Oriental medical classics, the Chinese refers the Soleus muscle of the leg as The second Heart. It has been understood for thousands of years that correct anatomical and physiological function of the Soleus muscle of the calf act as a second heartbeat. While the heart pumps 5-7 thousand liters of blood per day towards the extremities, the soleus is one of the most important muscles assisting blood flow back to the Heart. The heart pumps arterial blood and the soleus muscle pumps venous blood. It is not a coincidence why most Kung Fu practitioners spend countless of hours on leg conditioning exercises such as the horse or bow and arrow stance. Repetitive squats (done correctly) without weights done daily can be extremely beneficial to your overall health, as martial arts is not for everybody and not the only way to achieving strong legs.
