A structural engineer from Splashtacular, along with local experts, met at the Furman Aquatic Center today to examine cracks in the structural supports of the drop slide and tube slides. Through an annual routine inspection, the cracks were discovered recently, and the slides were closed Monday. “When the issue was brought to our attention, we immediately contacted the manufacturer, Splashtacular, to determine our next steps,” said Ames Parks and Recreation Director Keith Abraham. While minimizing the inconvenience to Furman patrons is the primary goal, safety comes first. “We must ensure our facility is safe for all swimmers and staff all hours of operation,” he added. “We know this is an inconvenience, and we apologize to our users.” After examining the cracks, experts noted the supports were not installed with proper drainage holes, which allowed water to build up inside the support beams. During the colder months, it is likely the water went through a freeze and thaw cycle. “At this point, we think the accumulation of ice was most likely the cause of cracks in the support beams,” Abraham said. Abraham noted he is working with local experts to schedule repairs to the support structures. The repairs are anticipated to take one to two days to complete. “We want to get the slides operating again as soon as possible,” Abraham said. “We appreciate our patrons’ support and patience as we work to resolve this issue.” The remainder of the Furman Aquatic Center, which includes the lazy river, 50-meter pool, diving boards, basketball hoops, youth slide, and zero depth splash pool with water playground, remains open during regular hours. The Furman Aquatic Center opened in 2010. It was designed by RDG Architects and Waters Edge Aquatic Design.
