A student asked me today... how feasible is it to sustain life if he chooses to further his studies abroad (i.e. outside of Malaysia)? This is best answered by a student himself; there are quite a few students in my friend list who are indeed living abroad and surviving. However, I dont want to disappoint you if seeing my travel photos was the reason behind the wish. In most cases, students living abroad will need part time jobs. The RM translates to only 20 cents in Europe and even less in the UK. So whatever youre hoping to get from mom & pop, or from your sponsor isnt going to be more than barely enough. With a student visa, you will usually be allowed some form of employment up to a number of hours per week. Its enough - because if you work more than that you will likely kill your studies anyway. Regardless of how you feel when you see your friends splurging on designer clothes, living abroad is no bed of roses. Theyve probably been saving with great discipline and bought them in outlet stores or during sales. However, studying abroad - and mixing internationally, not with your own Malay people - remains a good exposure and is a good preparation for working there if you wish to do so later.
