A successful outcome for the Creator of the Popular (a huge understatement) Game, “Candy Crush Saga.” The creator of the popular game “Candy Crush Saga,” King Ltd., has settled its lawsuit ac-cusing rival developer 6waves of making copycat games of “Pet Rescue Saga” and “Farm Heroes Saga”. The settlement terms require 6waves to stop selling and advertising its “Treasure Epic” and “Farm Epic” games, in addition to attorney fees and an undisclosed payment for the revenue 6Waves has netted from the games. Last November, 6Waves unsuccessfully attempted to move the jurisdiction to Beijing, where the Chinese court would have most likely favored the Hong Kong based company and the case would have been tossed. As most of us know, historically speaking, the Chinese legal system has not had a strong reputation for protecting intellectual property. Both games are Facebook-based puzzle and adventure games, in which players can solve chal-lengers and share virtual items with friends. Although the games are free to play, revenue is gen-erated on the optional content available to players, such as extra lives and character skill up-grades. “We believe in a thriving game-development community based on fair competition. However, this was a case where another company sought to take advantage of the hard work and creativity of two of our games teams. In such circumstances, we will always look to vigorously enforce our rights,” said in a statement by Robert Miller, King’s chief legal officer. Jennifer King, a partner of the firm who represented King said, “We are very pleased with the resolution of this matter on behalf of King and look forward to continuing to vigorously defend the company’s intellectual property behind the popular games that engage users around the world.” King Ltd. has an audience of 128 million daily active users, and over 1.2 billion daily game sessions. Wow! Of that, Candy Crush Saga makes up 93 million of those daily users, and 1.085 billion of those games.
