A summary of the core beliefs and doctrines of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons)... This is not a summary of core beliefs and doctrines. This is a carefully selected and filtered subset of the core beliefs and doctrines of the church. Its a mix of doctrine that pretty much all Christian denominations would say, the same petulant cry weve heard over and over that Gosh, we are Christians too! when the members of the church dont really even understand why theyre not considered Mormons (Its in the name of our church!--like that impresses anyone), with a couple uniquely Mormon doctrines thrown in: pre-existence and modern revelation. Oh, but theres so much more thats left out! So its not a summary at all. Its yet another carefully filtered propaganda piece designed for proselyting motives, complete with the same bland Michael MacLeanesque music they always include in their productions. (For all I know, hes the one who composed it.) Which is fine with me, if thats what they want to produce (although calling it a summary is a bit disingenuous). But heres the part I dont get. Do they really think this fluff piece will have any impact on anyone? Ive been having this reaction to church productions for many years now. Who are they gearing these things toward? What is their intended audience? If their intent is to give existing faithful Mormons warm fuzzies, perhaps a tear to their eye, about their religion, then well done! Continue with the good work! Youve succeeded admirably! But if their intent is to proselyte--as the context seems to indicate--to reach out to, communicate with, and hopefully sway non-Mormons in a positive way, Im left scratching my head. These productions are way too bland, superficial, vague, devoid of uniqueness in the doctrine, and syrupy sap-laden, that I cant imagine their having any impact on anyone but a small segment of the general population (perhaps the same people who comprise the audience of the Hallmark Channel). I get the sense that the church production people operate under a similar paradigm as the Utah film community generally: if their own community says how wonderful their production is, then they assume everyone in the world will think its wonderful. The church is in desperate need of learning the very basic Communication 101 principle: Know thy audience. Otherwise theyre gonna keep right on producing bland, unimpressive crap that only speaks to the ward choir. https://youtube/watch?v=IUaHacwLxao
