A superb victory by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in the 2014 F1 Spanish GP! The 2008 World Champion was never challenged by anyone during the entire 66 lap race. It may have appeared that Nico Rosberg would have overtaken his teammate if there was an extra lap. Rosberg was chasing Hamilton’s gearbox after his last pit stop and cut the gap from 5 seconds to 1 second. In the end only six-tenth of a second separated the 2 silver arrow cars. The top three drivers at the end of the race were the same as the drivers lining up before the race with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo filling up the last spot on the podium. The Australian finally was able to keep his trophy after having been disqualified at his home race in Melbourne back in March. Ricciardo’s teammate Sebastian Vettel proved to everyone why he is a 4 time World Champion by cutting through the field from 15th position to cross the finish line in 4th. Surely Vettel’s feisty performance will silence his critics on his overtaking abilities which were made during his dominance in the sport. The German didn’t have to overtake at all having leading races most of the time in the past 4 years. William’s Valtteri Bottas completed the race in a lonely 5th position. Local hero Fernando Alonso managed to overtake his teammate Kimi Raikkonen with 3 laps remaining to take 6th position. It is now customary to see Ferrari taking the best of the rest honours. The Prancing Horse team simply lack straight line speed and slow corner aerodynamics to challenge the Red Bulls let alone fight Mercedes for the Championships. Surely Alonso’s patience with the team have run dry with another humiliation at his home race. The 2 time World Champion deserves a better car. Romain Grosjean gave Lotus their first points of the season in 8th position ahead of Force India’s Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg in 9th and 10th positions respectively. Spain victory marks Mercedes’ 5th consecutive win and 4th 1-2 finish in the new power unit era. It is also Hamilton’s 4th consecutive win and the Briton leads the Driver’s Championship with 3 points adrift from teammate Rosberg. It is hard not to make comparisons with the 2009 season in which Brawn took the Championship by storm. Coincidentally this is McLaren’s worst start of a season since 2009. Next destination, Monaco Monte Carlo! 2014 F1 Spanish GP (Catalunya) 1st Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) 2nd Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) 3rd Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) 4th Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) 5th Valtteri Bottas (Williams) 6th Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) 7th Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) 8th Romain Grosjean (Lotus) 9th Sergio Perez (Force India) 10th Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) Check out my personal collection of Lewis Hamilton’s specially designed helmet worn during the 2012 F1 Singapore GP.
