A tad early for day 44 Praying through the Psalms Day 44 Psalm 22: 6 But I am a worm, and no man; A reproach of men, and despised by the people. 7All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8He trusted in the LORD, let Him rescue Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him! O Lord Jesus, You were treated cruelly and You did everything right. You were despised and rejected by men without a human cause. Lord, when I am mistreated, I know that I am a sinner. In some ways, I deserve worse treatment than I have gotten due to my sin. There is none righteous except Christ alone. Jesus felt like a worm because of His mistreatment. Lord, I have felt despised of men. I have had what little goodness I have done thrown back at me and despised. I have been the object of those who gathered together in little rooms and conspired against me. I begin to understand what Christ underwent for me. Lord, they ridiculed me. They mocked me. They say that You are not in my ministry. So they mocked Paul and John (See II Cor 11; III Jn 1: 9 - 11). Jesus, they said to You, if He is the Son of God, then let Him come down from the cross. But because You are the Son of God You would not come down. You chose to stay on the cross to pay for our sin. If You had come off of the cross, then there would be no hope for us in God. O Lord, they have justified their sin. They have mocked our faith in You. They have despised our labors, our faith. Psalm 22: 9 But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mothers breasts. 10I was cast upon You from birth. From My mothers womb You have been My God. 11Be not far from Me, For trouble is near; For there is none to help. Lord, You brought me to Yourself at an early age. You have helped me and planned for me before I was born. Ultimately, You alone are the one who cares for us. All other help is only secondary and a temporary tool that You have provided. We are in a spiritual battle (Ephesians 6:10-20). Satan wants to destroy us (I Peter 5:8-9). All human help is vain unless You are in it. Some may trust in horses. Some may trust in chariots, but we will trust in the name of the Lord our God (Psalm 20:7; 33:16-17; Isaiah 31:1). Even our best efforts are nothing unless You have led us, unless You are in them to deliver us. Psalm 22: 12 Many bulls have surrounded Me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me. 13They gape at Me with their mouths, Like a raging and roaring lion. 14I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me. 15My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death. 16For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; 17I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. 18They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots. 19But You, O LORD, do not be far from Me; O My Strength, hasten to help Me! 20Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog. 21Save Me from the lions mouth And from the horns of the wild oxen! Bulls, lions, dogs and wild oxen, all these beasts are set against me. The bulls charge and roar. The lions roar and cause me to tremble right before they attack and tear the flesh from my bones. All my courage just melts out of me. There is no strength, no energy to fight back. I can’t even cry for help I am so weary, so broken so worn. The dogs do their damage by running in and out, biting here and there. If I reach my hands out to defend myself, they bite my hands. Yet on a deeper and more tragic way, these words speak of You, Lord Jesus and Your death on the cross when they nailed Your hands and feet to the cross. The nails were the teeth of the dogs piercing, biting and hurting. They cast lots for Your clothing. In this section of Psalm 22, there are only enemies. We are surrounded by the congregation of the wicked. Help us, O Lord. We feel alone, abandoned and neglected by our friends, but also attacked by our enemies. You alone are our strength and our help. You alone are our Deliverer and Savior. If You do not rescue us, then we are lost. O Lord hear. O Lord, help us. Apart from You there is no hope.
