A taxi driver cried today, twice. I made him cry the second time. And, it was a good thing. It started off with me catching a cab from MBK to home. My driver was on his phone crying. I asked him what happened and he said his wife had given birth to a baby boy, his first son, and he was so happy. He was crying tears of pride, while also apologising to me. He had to travel home, 9 hours on the bus to Chiang Mai, to see his wife, his in-laws, and parents who were all celebrating. Hed travel at midnight because he had to make the days rent: 700 baht a day to the company before costs. Petrol about 300 baht. Yesterday he made 1200 baht (NZ $50). His take home pay was 200 baht for 12 hours work ($8 NZ). I sat in the back of the car feeling stink. Yeah, I know this is a different country, and there are different costs, and they work for less here blah, blah, blah. But I thought about this guy, his young baby, and his wife, and how they want to see him. And all these memories flooded my mind..like when I first saw my boys, and they looked at me for the first time...like my wife and the yards she went through pushing out those lil giants, without a complaint...and Dad who came to see both mokos being born...not saying much, but there either reading Best Bets or pacing around. All that and more flooded my mind. So as the Cab driver dropped me, the cost being 75 baht for a 30 m ride, I politely paid him extra: 1000 baht for the car rent and petrol, so he could go home early; and another 1000 baht for his wife and the lil prince who was just born. He cried and said thank you very much. I said, no man, thank you very much, for reminding me how precious kids and family are. #payitforward
