A teacher learns Going off to college was a big deal for my son Michael—and for me. I worried about him being on his own for the first time. Lord, send me a sign that Michael will be safe, I prayed. I began a new school year, as well. A roomful of children awaited me, and I was relieved for the distraction. I looked out at those young faces, so eager to learn. Soon enough, their mothers would be sending them off to college, too. After art class, I announced recess. Everyone jumped up and ran outside—except for one girl. “I’d like to stay inside and finish my picture, Mrs. McEwen,” Lexi said. While Lexi drew, I tried to catch up on paperwork, but my mind kept wandering back to Michael. Lexi interrupted to hand me her masterpiece: three big, colorful angels.
