A team of NASA researchers using state-of-the-art technology are tracking Hurricane Iselle, currently a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This image was taken from the National Centers for Environmental Predictions (NCEP) Advanced Weather Information Processing System (NAWIPS), the current decision support system used by NOAAs National Hurricane Center. The data is provided to the National Hurricane Center (and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu) in near-real-time by the NASA Short-term Prediction Research and Transition Center (SPoRT) for use with other products to monitor the development of tropical storms. SPoRT is a NASA project to transition unique observations and research capabilities to the operational weather community to improve short-term forecasts on a regional scale.
