A teenage boy has been charged after a shopkeeper was allegedly struck with a rock during a robbery at West Kempsey this morning. About 6:30am, Saturday 8 March 2014, a 27-year-old woman was working in the store on Sea Street when two males entered the premises. The pair looked around before leaving the store. Moments later they returned, with one of the males allegedly striking the woman on the back of the head with a rock. She sustained a laceration to her head and fell to the floor. The males allegedly threatened to harm the woman further before demanding cash and cigarettes. While they were helping themselves to items from the store, two witnesses heard the commotion and helped the injured woman flee the premises. Police from Mid North Coast Local Area Command were called to the scene and located one of the boys hiding behind a bush on River Street. The 16-year-old boy, who was allegedly found in possession of some of the stolen cash, was arrested and taken to Kempsey Police Station, where he was charged with robbery in company causing wounding. He was refused bail to appear in a children’s court tomorrow (Sunday 9 March 2014). The other boy was not located and detectives are continuing their investigations to identify and locate him. He is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, 16-18 years old, 170cm tall, wearing a light-coloured t-shirt and football shorts. The injured shopkeeper was taken to Kempsey Hospital, where she received three stitches to the back of her head and was released.
