A theoretical question for my academic friends: if faculty have the right to set our own course policies, could we add a no guns in class statement on our syllabi? If I have the right to prohibit my students from playing video games while Im lecturing, surely I have the right to prohibit my students from playing with their guns in class. To extend this argument, if the majority of faculty in a particular department agrees on a common departmental policy, then departments could prohibit guns in all of the classes taught by that department, and in all of the faculty and staff offices inhabited by members of that department. Thus students would not be able to bring their guns to the department when they visit those faculty in office hours. Even further, the UAF Faculty Senate could pass a motion, that if passed by a 2/3 majority (assuming the Chancellor would decline to sign), could continue the current restrictions on guns on campus. The 2nd amendment (after Heller 2008) only forbids states, municipalities, and the federal government from infringing on individuals rights to keep and bear arms. Not faculty bodies. What do you think?
